Exabyte Announces San-Ready X200 Automated Tape Library; X200 First Mammoth Library in Arrowhead Family of Tape Library Solutions

BOULDER, Colo., March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Exabyte Corp. (Nasdaq: EXBT), an industry leader in tape automation and solutions, today announced the launch of its Exabyte X200 Mammoth Library. The X200 is designed to deliver reliable, scalable and economical storage solutions to large application servers and storage networks. This high performance tape library is fully equipped for integration within a Storage Area Network environment.

The Exabyte X200 accommodates from two to 10 Mammoth tape drives and from 40 to 200 170m EXATAPE(TM) AME data cartridges. "Because the X200 is based on Mammoth's 5.25 inch half-high form factor, we've created a tape library that offers twice the amount of storage capacity than any other library in its class," said Bill Marriner, president and CEO of Exabyte Corp.

The X200 supports applications such as lights-out data center operations, unattended network backup/restore, remote storage, automated archiving, imaging and hierarchical storage management. The Exabyte X200 will be the best value library in its class with a list price starting at $34,985 for the X200 library with 40 slots and two drives, and up to $97,920 for a library with 200 slots and 10 drives.

"With the X200, automation users have a high-performance tape library alternative that will meet the full range of their automation needs," said Mike Koclanes, vice president and general manager of the storage automation division for Exabyte. "The X200 scales from 40 cartridges to 200 cartridges and from two drives to 10 drives in the same rack-mount area, without affecting the robot reliability. This library is perfectly suited to meet the storage growth expected in the marketplace and has features to connect directly to Storage Area Networks." The compressed capacities of Exabyte's X200 are up to eight TB with 200 slots with throughput of up to 216 GB/hour with 10 drives.

The most significant feature of the X200 is remote operation made possible with a Java browser. The X200, and all Exabyte Arrowhead(TM) libraries, provides an "out-of-band" connection to Ethernet for management and control without being impacted during drive operations. All front panel user activity can be performed remotely from anywhere in the world across the Web. Additional features include front door access with key lock and electronic override, hot pluggable drives, 480 emulation mode for instant software compatibility, and the options for a redundant, hot-swap power supply.

The X200 has been designed and optimized for Exabyte's Mammoth 2 drives, but will initially ship with Mammoth drives. Equipped with Mammoth drives, the X200 will have a capacity of 8 TB and transfer data at 60 MB/sec.* With Mammoth 2 drives, the library will store 30TB at 300 MB/sec.** The X200 comes with worldwide support and a three-year warranty with the first year on site. The X200, which fully supports network backup/restore, remote storage and automated archiving operations, begins shipping worldwide on March 31, 1999.

The Exabyte X200 has been designed with performance in mind offering Ultra-2 SCSI LVD as the standard interface, SCSI-2 Fast/Wide Differential and Fibre Channel capability. The X200 is extremely reliable with a mean cycles between failure (MCBF) specification of greater than 1 million. Available in rack or stand-alone configurations for installation flexibility, the X200 also includes a number of features such as multi-drive capability to allow for fault tolerance, shared parts and FRUs across the Arrowhead family, field upgradability, standard Ethernet port for browser-based management, five- cartridge entry/exit port with removable magazine for off-line storage, laser scanner for calibration, bar code reading for reduced inventory times and improved file management, dedicated cleaning slot and enhanced LCD display.
