03/15/1999 - DaimlerChrysler to Make Fuel-Cell Statement?
Washington, D.C. - The chairman of DaimlerChrysler - an automaker planning a fuel cell-powered vehicle on the market by 2004 - will make a major fuel cell-related announcement on March 17 in Washington, D.C., reports the Wall Street Journal. While fuel cells were just a few years ago considered an environmentalist's 'pipe dream,' the devices are now the subject of a heavily financed, research and development race between the major automakers. In fact, several automakers say they will have commercially viable fuel-cell vehicles within five years. With the lead times required in the auto industry, the automakers must make their decisions as early as this year. Ballard Power Systems, the leading fuel cell-developer, last year received a $750 million investment from DaimlerChrysler and Ford, who intend to sell fuel-cell drivetrains to others to bring down the costs (News Notes 12/15/97 & 4/7/98). Fuel cells convert hydrogen into electricity via a process that does not use combustion or produce smog-causing emissions. Several automakers intend to use systems that convert liquid methanol to hydrogen.
