China Minister Blusters Over Espionage Charges
Date: 3/16/99

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji attacked U.S. charges of stolen military secrets and Washington's support for dissidents before his trip here next month. Zhu called allegations that military secrets were leaked to China a ''fallacy.'' The White House dismissed his remarks and said the issue of military espionage definitely will be part of the talks between Zhu and U.S. officials.

Albright, dissidents scored:

Zhu said he was fighting for freedom and human rights during the civil war against Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists when Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was in high school. He also was blunt in condemning Chinese dissidents. ''Don't support those so- called pro-democracy activists,'' he said, referring to exiled dissidents. He warned that allowing exiles to return would bring ruin to China.
