IDT's Net2Phone to be Bundled in Netscape Browser

Mordy Rothberg, executive vice president of IDT's Net2Phone division (www.net2phone.com), says Net2Phone's IP telephony icon will be the only such icon appearing on the Netscape browser for the agreement's two-year duration. Net2Phone, however, remains free to make similar deals with other portals.

"I could do a deal with Bill," he says, referring to Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft Corp. (www.microsoft.com), whose Microsoft Explorer browser is Netscape's main rival.

Net2Phone's icon appears on other web portals, but this deal is different, Rothberg says, because it bundles Net2Phone's software in the browser itself. In the other portals, a user must download the software before being able to make a call.

"What this does is really give us a tremendous reach," Rothberg says. "It really gives us ubiquity. When you see ads on the web for traditional [telecom] companies, they're usually for a service off the web. We're very web-centric. And then there's the e-commerce application. Forget Amazon.com, because if I want to buy a book I probably don't need a really sophisticated website. But if I want to buy life insurance, I probably want to talk to someone to close the deal
