Schuh would say that he is just an effective politician in the era of politics as bloodsport. Of course, that is ludicrous. The whole thesis is a way for Democrats to justify the fact that they cannot easily get majorities. It is another example of Apriorism: since Democrats are for the people, and the Republicans are for the upper classes, it is natural that Democrats should win elections in all but the most upscale districts. Thus, there must be a nefarious explanation if they do not. Elia Kazan, a great director, made a truly bad movie elucidating the thesis with Andy Griffith in the '50s, called "A Face In the Crowd", where the evil industrialists bankroll a cornpone show to manipulate the masses into believing that big business is good for the country.
