March 15, 1999 Dow Jones Newswires S. Korea's Samsung Elec To Start Exports Of 256MB SDRAM's Dow Jones Newswires SEOUL -- South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. (Q.SSE) said Tuesday it will begin shipping its 256-megabit synchronous dynamic random access memory chips, or SDRAM's, to major overseas PC and systems manufacturers by the end of March. The initial shipment of 256-megabit SDRAM's to major overseas companies, such as Intel Corp. (INTC), International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) and Siemens AG, will total around 20,000 units, according to a press release from Samsung Electronics, the world's leading maker of semiconductor chips. The announcement comes as Samsung Electronics starts mass production of 256-megabit SDRAM's Tuesday at its plant in Kiheung, near Seoul. The company claims it is the first manufacturer in the world to begin mass production of the next-generation semiconductors. "Samsung Electronics is about six months ahead of competitions in the mass production of 256-megabit SDRAM's, which will help the company become the leader in this market," a company spokesman said. The company expects to manufacture around two million to three million 256-megabit SDRAM's this year, with sales projected to reach up to $300 million in 1999, the company said in its press release. The new 256-megabit SDRAM chips are expected to sell for about $105 per unit, which is much more expensive than the mainstream 64-megabit SDRAM's which are priced around $11 per unit, Samsung Electronics said. Samsung Electronics, a unit of South Korea's second largest conglomerate Samsung Group, produces around 18 million 64-megabit SDRAM's per month. At 0400 GMT (11:00 p.m. EST Monday), shares of Samsung Electronics were up 600 won (KRW) ($1=KRW1,229.1) to KRW87,400 on volume of 155,980 shares. -By Park Kyung-hee; 822-732-2165; khpark@ap.org
