Vancouver Stock Exchange - Van Sun says VSE was unloved and unwanted Vancouver Stock Exchange VSE Shares issued 0 1899-12-30 close $0 Tuesday Mar 16 1999 The Vancouver Sun reports in its business section in its Tuesday edition that the Vancouver Stock Exchange's worst problem is that it was unloved and unwanted. Reporter David Baines says the bon vivants of Howe Street, including Murray Pezim, Harry Moll and Herb Capozzi, celebrated their achievements, and their excesses, at their annual Howe Street awards ceremony and openly professed their love for the VSE. Their wild promotions, however, attracted too much bad press, prompting the British Columbia government to appoint a commission of inquiry into regulation of the VSE. The British Columbia Securities Commission pressured the VSE to crack down and the VSE, in turn, hired president Michael Johnson to ride herd on brokers and improve the quality of listings. The old gang was gradually broken up. Mr. Moll was banished. Mr. Capozzi assumed an uncharacteristically low profile. Mr. Pezim was suspended and died a bitter man. The cold, clinical hand of Mr. Johnson coincided with the hard realities of a bear market, brought on largely by external factors.
