- I predict AOL goes down big time

- There's a free ISP; with a ton of local numbers; provided you take the ads with it. Backed by some big names. No monthly charges.

One is netzero.com which I signed my brother-in-law in Tucson up with. When they get an Evansville, IN number I'll switch my mother from Mindspring to Netzero also. However, they require you to use their dialer program (which also displays the ads) and they don't support Linux as the user's desktop OS, let alone a Linux machine acting as an internet gateway for multiple Win98 machines like I have.

Also, AOL is making deals with the Baby Bells to get high speed DSL access to AOL at only $40 per month instead of $40 per month plus ISP costs. This actually makes DSL competitive with cable, and considering that only about seven people in the US can actually get a cable modem (and I'm not one of them) these deals will probably suck a lot of business their way. Hell, I've been an AOL hater for ages (until I bought 50 shares on March 8 at 87-3/4) but I'll switch for that.

P.S. When is SI going to fix their spell checker so that "internet" isn't flagged as a misspelled word?

I have become increasingly dissatisfied w/ AOL in the past few weeks and will be cancelling my membership as soon as I use up my FREE months remaining.

I have been an AOL member for over 3 years from the days when they used to charge by the minute. I have had monthly AOL bills in excess of $200 back in 1995 but since AOL began giving you points for using the AOL charge card, I haven't paid them a dime in over a year.

Recently their service seems to be getting worse and worse. I've been getting "low memory" errors just about everytime I use AOL these days. I've got 128mb of ram and over 10mb of free HD so I know it's not my computer.

It wouldn't be so bad if there was something on AOL that I use but more and more I find that I don't need AOL and I can find everything I want on the web and faster too.

Recently I tried MSN's trial membership and to say the least I was very impressed. The connections were reliable and quite fast too. The only complaint I had about MSN was no more than one email address is allowed. Currently I need at least two email addresses and if AOL ever allows for multiple email addresses I will make the switch from my local ISP.

I'm probably one of the few that will be dropping AOL for MSN but if AOL doesn't improve their network, sooner rather than later they will begin seeing their new membership numbers start to flatten out and once that happens, that 500 PE will shrink to about 100.

GO MSFT
