Burt,

I remember spending a day in the summer of 1978 test driving various Japanese and American small cars. It was the first time I was buying my own car, so the memory is quite vivid.

I drove Toyotas, Datsuns, Fords, and GMCs that day, and was thoroughly disappointed with all of them. At the end of the day I went to the Honda dealership. I was not considering buying a Honda because the cars were so small and looked like pieces of junk.

It took about 5 seconds driving the Civic to recognize that the handling and acceleration were in a class well above the competition. The stickshift motion was smooth as silk. I bought the car on the spot at quite a savings over what I would have paid for a Pinto or a Datsun. About 2 or 3 years later Honda began introducing normal sized cars, and started the process of pushing their prices up.

Honda and demand

Those dealers that were charging you above market prices were kicking back to get delivery. There was a major scandal over kickbacks made by dealers to assure they got allocation of models.

My 76 CVCC lasted until 1989 and had 145K miles. Cause of death: brake failure (the brake pedal snapped off its mooring.)

I remember that when I arrived at Bell Labs I was one of the few driving a Honda and when I left all the engineers had them.
