Kent, well said. To go it alone will be difficult, but perhaps not impossible. The sales to UUnet as an example. I would appreciate the opinion of industry insiders. Maybe that includes you? wj

<However, most carriers and RBOC's have already chosen
their ATM technology. It will be easier pulling alligator teeth than displacing the likes
of CSCO and LU/ASND>

Not really, all of them really need to put in the next generation WAN technology where applications aware networking will be the key. MCI uses some FORE as well as Sprint now. This application aware glue will tie between large enterprises' WAN newtork and carriers' side WAN network in a cohesive manner. Look at how MSFT is using FORE's switches in their campus and how they're interconencting using fat OC48 pipes using carriers' WAN. FORE is well positioned right now to capture this extremely large mkt. Many large enterprises likley will be doing similar setups in the near future. Especially those that want great control over how their applications and their partners/suppliers applications run over the network. And, beleive me, many enterprises would want to as this gives them the competitive edge.
IMO, FORE may have some problems in this qtr, may be not as they said they're backend loaded. This is like ASND when they had some problem transitioning into the new GX550 and the new OC12 cards. FORE is having the same minor issue of getting ASX4000 and the the new ESX2400/4800 out. IMO, this is a bragian price and whoever are selling it probably do not know much about the future of networking technology.
