UK's Dorling Kindersley<DKN.L> boosts online spend
LONDON, March 16 (Reuters) - British illustrated book
publisher Dorling Kindersley said on Tuesday it will spend at
least one million pounds over the next year to transform its
website into an online catalogue of its 2,000 titles.
Chief Executive James Middlehurst said the company, famed
for its adult reference and children's pop-up books, would make
a "significant investment" in its dk.com website, allowing
readers to buy its books at comparable prices to other online
booksellers like Amazon.com <AMZN.O>.
"We know we have to spend at least one million over the next
year, it may be more," he told Reuters after a news conference.
Dorling's online strategy consists of three phases --
transforming dk.com into an online catalogue, then adding
personalised client service and software products for sale.
Unfortunately, a systems crash marred Dorling's
demonstration of the new service.
"Technology -- it's not like just opening a book, is it?"
Chairman Peter Kindersley joked.
However, Dorling officials managed to reboot the system and
demonstrate a prototype of the service, which will be available
to Internet users over the next few weeks.
