Compaq and Cadence Announce Allegro Studio Laptop and SPECCTRAQuest Workstation Solutions; Powerful Design Solutions for the Desktop and the Road
Business Wire - March 16, 1999 09:12
HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 16, 1999--Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) and Cadence Design Systems Inc. (NYSE:CDN) today announced in the U.S. the availability of two new solutions that enable electronics designers to harness the power of high-speed board design software from the Cadence(R) Intrica(tm) product family on powerful Windows NT-based workstations and portables from Compaq. The two solutions comprise Cadence's Allegro studio running on a Compaq Armada 7800 portable computer and Cadence's new SPECCTRAQuest(tm) interconnect designer running on a Compaq Professional Workstation SP700, both at extremely affordable prices.

"Compaq and Cadence realize that the best design ideas can surface at the office or they can occur at home or on the road. That's why we're offering both the SPECCTRAQuest workstation and Allegro studio Laptop solution," said Ray Villareal, Vice President of North America Enterprise Computing, Compaq Computer Corp. "The availability of a powerful Compaq Armada running Allegro studio on Windows NT complements an engineer's Professional Workstation running SPECCTRAQuest at the office and allows them to harness their creativity no matter wherever they are."

Allegro Studio Laptop Solution

The Allegro studio Laptop solution combines Cadence's Allegro studio, a complete printed circuit board (PCB) design solution, with Compaq's Armada 7800 portable computer. Allegro studio includes an integrated set of tools for schematic capture, place-and-route and output to manufacturing. It is built on the proven foundation of Cadence flagship PCB technology -- Allegro designer and the SPECCTRA auto-router. The Compaq Armada 7800 Series delivers high performance with an outstanding array of features including an Intel Mobile Pentium(R) II 366 MHz processor, a 14.1-inch 1024 x 768 color thin-film transistor (CTFT) display supporting up to 16.8 million colors, a DVD-ROM drive and 64 MB of SDRAM. Also included is an industry-leading portable Accelerated Graphic Port (AGP) implementation with a dedicated, high-performance 66 MHz graphic bus and a S3ViRGE/MX graphics controller with 4 MB of SGRAM for increased 3D acceleration. The Allegro studio Laptop solution is available starting at $14,995(1) with Allegro studio software.

"This landmark announcement by Cadence and Compaq ushers in the era of Mobile Technical Computing by enabling engineers to perform demanding electronics design tasks anywhere the need arises, from their office to a conference room to an airline jet," said Dave DeMaria, Vice President of Marketing, PCB and IC Design Products, Cadence Design Systems. "Cadence, the world's leading electronic design firm, and Compaq, the world leader in personal computers, have combined forces to deliver powerful and affordable solutions to make this new era possible."

"Wyle Systems is excited about partnering with Compaq and Cadence in delivering these solutions to our mutual customers. Our broad range of hardware products along with our extensive system and network integration capabilities helps us meet the expectations of our most demanding 'on-the-move' customers," said Ken Bagley, Director of Marketing, Computer Products Division at Wyle Systems.

SPECCTRAQuest Workstation Solution

The second solution includes Cadence's SPECCTRAQuest interconnect designer, an easy-to-use engineering environment focused on high-speed system and board design needs, running on a Compaq Professional Workstation SP700. The SPECCTRAQuest workstation solution enables designers to merge functional and physical design abstractions into a single intuitive environment to continuously explore and resolve performance-related constraints throughout the high-speed design process. The Pentium(R) II Xeon processor-based Compaq SP700 workstation provides an ideal SPECCTRAQuest platform, because its Highly Parallel System Architecture - delivering unmatched memory and I/O bandwidth on Windows NT - provides superb performance at affordable prices. The SPECCTRAQuest workstation solution is available starting at $82,500 for SPECCTRAQuest software and a Compaq Professional Workstation SP700 with a Pentium II Xeon 450 MHz processor with 512 KB of L2 cache, 256 MB of RAM, a 9 GB Wide-Ultra SCSI 10,000rpm hard drive, ELSA GLoria Synergy graphics and a 21-inch V1000 monitor.

The SPECCTRAQuest workstation solution delivers unmatched value because it brings discrete packages together on Windows NT for the first time at an estimated price of $75,000(1) that separately would be valued at more than $100,000. This value, combined with the scalable performance of the SP700, enables customers to put more design tools at their engineers' disposal to handle the most complex high-speed design problems.

Availability

Both solutions announced today are available immediately in the U.S. Customers can initiate their purchases of these solutions through Wyle Systems by calling toll-free at 1-800-726-9814.
