IMO IMF sales must occur in order to bale out the shorts. Forget the excuse - helping the poor countries debt burden - that just makes the sale politically justifiable. Who they really are helping are the shorts and the borrowers who simply have sold more gold than they can ever pay back. The IMF gold will help fill that deficiency and get the "lucky" (or well connected) funds off the hook.

Way I read it total IMF gold reserves = around 2-3 months demand.
They plan to sell only a part.
