Hello Paul,

Hope things are well. Do you have an opinion on if we may have a slight Second half slowdown in PCs sales to businesses because of the y2k problem? Clearly, there is doesn't seem to be any proof demand may be stronger or weaker then, but from talking with a few friends that are consultants, they believe businesses may slow purchases. On other convos, with the likes of companies involved in storage networks like emc or lgto, they seem to believe that nothing will slow them down in the second half. Sorry to babble, but wondered if you had an opinion--

thanks,
pigboy

Paul, more good news...Article...Intel Delivers New Family of Adapters for Mobile PCs...

March 16, 1999

HILLSBORO, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via NewsEdge Corporation --

New Mobile Adapters Deliver Industry-Leading Performance(a)

Combined with a New Level of Convenience and Reliability

Intel Corporation today announced two new CardBus mobile adapters that combine RealPort Integrated PC Card(b) functionality with the power of the new Intel(R) 82559 Fast Ethernet controller.

The Intel PRO/100 CardBus II and the Intel PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 CardBus II are the latest members of Intel's new family of 10/100 Fast Ethernet adapters and LOM (LAN-on-Motherboard) solutions, designed to boost network performance, increase manageability and reduce network support costs. These new CardBus adapters feature the RealPort Integrated PC Card design, providing enhanced functionality and ease of use by eliminating the need for external connectors (dongles). According to the Dell'Oro Group, Intel was the world's leading supplier of 10/100 Ethernet Connections for the PC platform for the second half of 1998(c).

"The rapid growth of the mobile PC market continues to drive demand for more robust and manageable mobile network connections," said Mark Christensen, vice president and general manager of Intel's Network Communications Group. "The PRO/100 CardBus II adapters are designed to meet these challenges head-on with features that enhance remote management, convenience and performance to increase the overall effectiveness of mobile computing."

Easier Connections for Mobile PCs

Designed to solve real-world challenges of mobile PC computing, the RealPort Integrated PC Card functionality built into Intel's latest mobile cards improves portable networking by addressing two of the biggest problems faced by notebook users -- lost or broken dongles and broken pop-out jacks. With the RealPort Integrated PC Card design, the modem and network ports are integrated directly into the adapter. Any standard LAN cable or phone line can plug directly into the Intel PRO/100 CardBus II or Intel PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 CardBus II, eliminating the problems associated with lost, forgotten or broken dongles.

Industry-Leading Performance

Based on the powerful new Intel 82559 Fast Ethernet controller, the new PRO/100 CardBus II adapters deliver industry-leading(a) 100 Mbps performance combined with power-saving 3.3-volt technology and Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) support to extend critical battery life. The versatile PRO/100 CardBus II adapter can plug into mixed networks and auto-sense 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps network speeds, while the Intel PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 CardBus II adapter delivers the added benefit of fast 56 Kbps modem connectivity with a V.90 enabled modem.

Exceptional Compatibility and Management

The PRO/100 CardBus II adapters share common software -- including drivers, configuration utilities and management tools -- with Intel's new generation of 82559-based desktop, mobile and server adapters. This common software architecture, combined with Wired for Management (WfM) 2.0 baseline compliance, provides a powerful solution to help network professionals reduce the costs associated with training staff, deploying systems, qualifying drivers and administrating upgrades. In addition, labor-intensive tasks such as software deployment, after-hours upgrades and routine maintenance can be automated by pairing these adapters with mobile PCs that support Universal Network Boot and remote wakeup.

"We've designed our entire product line -- from server to desktop to mobile PC adapters -- to meet the needs of system administrators as they face today's management challenges," said Greg Lang, vice president, Intel's Network Communications Group and general manager, Network Interface Division. "By delivering uniform drivers, utilities and management capabilities on all of our new adapters, Intel is offering companies tools to help simplify administration across their entire network systems -- a key factor in reducing total cost of ownership."

Availability

The Intel PRO/100 CardBus II and Intel PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 CardBus II featuring RealPort Integrated PC Card functionality join Intel's new generation of 82559-based adapters on April 19. The new Intel PRO/100 CardBus II adapters will be available in single packs for $174.00 and the new Intel PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 CardBus II adapters will be available for $389 in single packs (U.S. suggested list).
