M2 PRESSWIRE via NewsEdge Corporation : At CeBIT '99, Siemens presented
the InterXpress IAD 4700 (Integrated Access Device) ATM Multiservice Access
Concentrator. This is the first available product in a new family of access
devices, developed and produced by Siemens to offer multiservice
functionality via broadband networks (ATM, FR). InterXpress IAD 4700 has
been designed for multiservice integration in the ATM access domain (voice,
video and data) for carrier and enterprise networks. The device complies
with quality-of-service (QoS) requirements thanks to ATM-based transmission
in wide area networks (WANs). The target group for InterXpress IAD 4700
includes carriers who offer simple WAN services such as ATM but who are now
starting to provide services such as LAN interworking, video communication
and voice communication, and also companies who wish to concentrate various
services on their existing infrastructure, making effective use of available
bandwidth while complying with quality-of-service (QoS) requirements.

The market for multiservice products is growing According to a report
entitled "ATM Access Devices" published in July 1998 by the US market
research organization International Data Corporation (IDC), the market
segment for ATM access devices is growing at an annual rate of 53 percent,
and is set to rise from US $ 110 million in 1997 to US $ 919 million in
2002. IDC defines ATM access devices as devices that are primarily intended
to combine different data streams and to feed them into an ATM trunk and to
an ATM core switch.

The integration of multiple services (such as IP, Circuit Emulation,
Transparent HDLC, LAN Interworking and Frame Relay) and the provision of
variable ATM interfaces such as E1/T1, E3/T3, STM-1/OC-3 and E1/T1 inverse
multiplexing are of vital importance to the functionality of these devices.
InterXpress IAD 4700 meets these requirements and goes even further, for
example by enabling network operators for the first time to offer their
customers supplementary services from a simple ATM connection and available
applications such as voice, data, video and fast Internet access with
simultaneous transmission via a single WAN connection.

Siemens InterXpress IAD 4700 ATM multiservice access concentrator is of
interest not only to PTTs and service providers but also to companies
looking to consolidate and administer the various services such as voice
communication (ISDN/analog), LAN data streams and video in a uniform network
instead of operating parallel networks for data services and voice services.

InterXpress IAD 4700 ATM multiservice access concentrator The InterXpress
IAD 4700 offers the high level of reliability of a carrier class device. It
uses a scalable platform with modules that can be installed and exchanged
with a high degree of flexibility and enables additional units to be used
for expanding the service interfaces via external add-on devices. In its
basic configuration, the access device will have interfaces to Frame Relay,
Circuit Emulation, 10/100Base- T Ethernet and E1-UNI as ATM interfaces.
Three expansion slots in the basic unit are also provided for alternative
ATM interfaces such as E1/T1 Inverse Multiplexing (IMA), E3/T3, STM-1 (155
Mbit/s) for single-mode and multimode optical fibers and, on the service
side, for voice compression, ISDN-S0, analog telephones, other Frame Relay
links and LAN interfaces.

Support for dynamic IP routing with protocols such as OSPF-2 and RIP-2 and
static IP routing makes the Siemens InterXpress IAD 4700 ATM multiservice
access concentrator a powerful IP ATM router and particularly suitable for
high-speed Internet access and other IP services such as Voice-over-IP.

For voice transmission the InterXpress IAD 4700 has the ability to
transfer in uncompressed form (CES) or in compressed form at 5.3 kbit/s
(ACELP standard), at 6.3 kbit/s (G.723.1A MP-MLQ) or at 8 kbit/s (G.729 CS-
ACELP). Depending on the configuration, the voice compression codecs can be
used for Voice-over-Frame- Relay transmission in accordance with the FRF.11
specification (Frame Relay Forum) or for Voice-over-IP in accordance with
the H.323 standard.

The IAD 4700 has two redundant power supply units and an additional
management port that can be accessed via ISDN-S0 to provide a high level of
fault tolerance and a means of operation in the event of a fault.

Traffic management and performance measurement functions All functions
without exception, such as CBR, rt-VBR, nrt-VBR, UBR and ABR, comply with
the ATM Forum Specification for Traffic Management 4.0. Traffic shaping per
virtual channel continues to be supported.

The Operation and Maintenance (O&M) functionality to ITU-T I.610 that is
of interest to carriers is integrated in the InterXpress IAD 4700. These
functions provide reliable availability analyses, defect indications and
runtime measurements for ATM cells.

HP OpenView, MainStreetXpress 45020/46020 or an HTTP-based element
management system may be used as the management platform.

The InterXpress IAD 4700 will be available from September 1999.
