Scum, if Sun thinks Merced is dead, then why are they spending valuable resources making sure Solaris will run on Merced??? If you ask me, the louder Sun knocks x86, Xeon, NT, etc., the more nervous they are. Those 4 & 8-way 550mhz Xeons would make me nervous if i was in McNealy's shoes.

Scumbria,

I've never heard of this company "Sun Microelectronics". Are you familiar with them? How is it that they are so aware of how HP feels about Merced?

Is anyone able to confirm any aspect of this report?

I've read on theregister and on the FACE/disgruntled former employees site that Merced was having problems, but the sources of the stories give me pause. However, I am willing to concede that these stories could reflect reality.

Does anyone have some independant confirmation of this info/speculation?

Thanks Bunches,

Chris

SCUMbria - Re: "What does that tell you about their confidence
in the IA-64?" "

Sounds like their confidence in the IA-64 is INFINITELY higher than in the AMD K7 - which didn't even get mentioned.

Scumbria,

Nothing in that YUK Register article makes any sense (no surprise). According to The Register, "McGhan was reacting to claims revealed here that Sun's UltraSparc III is late." Why should Merced have anything to do with the lateness of UltraSparc III, unless McGhan was only trying to say, "Well we're not as late as some other projects are"?

Plus McGhan is quoted as saying, "We're projecting that it will ship with an initial frequency of 600MHz. If it were shipping right now, it would be the fasted thing out there." Either he's way off base, or The Register inaccurately quoted him (once again no surprise). I can't reveal any numbers, but I can say that Merced will be faster than 600 MHz at its debut.

That report looks bogus to me. Wrong company name, bad grammar, ridiculous statements (25 years?)
