Gradual Sales

Treasury officials said if Congress approves a sale, which
the administration estimates would generate $1.5 billion, gold
would be sold gradually over time so as not to rock the markets.
''There is a growing willingness to sell gold, a willingness
that wasn't there before,'' said Joseph Foster, portfolio manager
at Van Eck Gold Resources Fund in New York, which manages about
$50 million of gold equities. ''No one knows how far down this
can take gold.''
