Doug;
Nic's are mainly used in business computers, and businesses
seem to like to buy the higher end models of PC's. PC's are
a writeoff item and spending 1-2k for one is no big deal.
A $60-$80 nic is no big deal, quality is. Companies like quality,
reliability and service. This is why IBM, HP, DELL and Compaq do
so well against a sea of cheaper alternatives. IT managers like
NIC's that they know they can trust.
3Com also sell's their chips to Mother board manufactures who
integrate the Lan into single board solutions.

Do not worry, if people can sell PC with $299, they sure had profit, so does NIC.
