HD: re:"Say you're in the middle of the Brazilian rainforest and you
can have any laptop with any necessary accessories"

Funny you should ask. Lawrence Magid writes a weekly column about PC's in the Los Angeles Times. He is currently in the Amazon rain forest (upriver, near Peru, I believe) trying to demonstrate precisely what you are wondering about, as part of an educational expedition. He is hoping to study the reliability and sturdiness of his portable under the jungle conditions and hopes to send periodic (daily) updates including pictures via a satellite uplink. He is carrying 3 digital cameras, (one professional model costing $15k and two off the shelf models costing $400).

HD, >>>Is it possible to
get on the 'net without a phone line plugged into your computer?<<<

Maybe not in the Brazilian rainforest, but in certain locales in the U.S., Metricom is one company that makes a wireless modem that can get you there.

Let us know how it works!
