Merrill Lynch was lukewarm on Ciena's acquisition. Their report took down Ciena's earnings by .20 for FY99 from .20-30 to 0-.10. The report also doesn't say a word about whether they think it was a good long-term move. I guess we should be glad that they didn't downgrade Ciena. IMO, this was GREAT for long-term shareholders, and bad for short-term traders. Ciena is going to mark time for an additional 6 mos. because of this acquisition. But it will come out of the acquisitions stronger, with a full array of solutions for transport and DWDM--something that CLECs and ISPs are looking for. In any event, I still think with some upside earnings surprises, Ciena should get into the 30s this calendar year and will bounce around up there.

Doughboy.

OTOH, it makes CIEN a better target for CSCO and others who do not have such products. I'd like to see it go to 18, however, as I would then be buying. Right now I have no CIEN but am waiting for the oppty.
