Fred so true...I don't believe enough people (especially short term thinking analysts), understand how important controlling standards is to an industry. Intel with it's massive R&D budget and focused strategic management efforts surely does. Check out the titan scoring one patent after another! :-)

Power conversion and load circuit on same integrated circuit (Assignee -- Intel Corporation)

March 16, 1999

U.S. Patents via NewsEdge Corporation : Abstract: A power conversion apparatus is disclosed where the active components of the power conversion system are integrated into the integrated circuit for which power is being supplied. Additionally, at least some of the passive components of the power conversion system remain external to the integrated circuit.

Ex Claim Text: A power conversion system for an integrated circuit comprising: a plurality of current carrying legs, each leg supplying a portion of the total input current required by said power conversion system for supplying power to said integrated circuit; a feedback control circuit coupled to said current carrying legs, said control circuit decreasing an output current by decreasing the total input current supplied by said legs if a voltage across said legs exceeds a reference voltage, said control circuit increasing the output current by increasing the total input current supplied by said legs if the voltage across said legs falls below said reference voltage, said feedback control circuit integrated onto said integrated circuit for which power is supplied; and a set of transistors coupled to said feedback control circuit, said set configured to regulate the amount of input current fed to said sower conversion system, said transistors switching according to a set of control signals generated by said feedback control circuits, said transistors integrated onto said integrated circuit for which power is being supplied.

Memory transfer apparatus and method useful within a pattern recognition system (Assignee -- Intel Corporation)

March 16, 1999

U.S. Patents via NewsEdge Corporation : Abstract: A computer implemented apparatus and method for transferring information from one set or sets of memory locations to another set or sets of memory locations. The present invention has particular advantageous use within a computer system specially implemented for pattern recognition applications, such as handwriting or voice recognition. The present invention includes a system with an automatic sequencer able to sequentially generate sequential source and destination addresses and able to generate appropriate data requests to internal and external memory controllers. The present invention memory to memory transfer unit allows memory transfer operations to occur in parallel with the operation of arithmetic pipelines that process pattern recognition procedures. Therefore, using the present invention, no additional processing time is consumed by a memory transfer. Double buffering is utilized to transfer information and process information in the same time frame.

Ex Claim Text: A method comprising: generating memory access requests to a first internal memory and to said external memory to transfer a first selected reference pattern representing a first written character from a library of reference patterns representing a plurality of written characters stored in said external memory between said external memory and said internal memory in response to a first plurality of parameters; comparing an unknown pattern to said first selected reference pattern; and transferring a second selected reference pattern representing a second written character from said external memory to a second internal memory during comparison of said unknown pattern to said first selected reference pattern in response to a second plurality of parameters; wherein transfer of said reference patterns between said external memory and said first and second internal memories occur during comparison between said unknown pattern and a previously transferred selected reference pattern and said plurality of parameters are not modified by transferring said first and second selected reference patterns between said external memory and said first and second internal memories such that subsequent transfers are performed in accordance with said plurality of parameters.

Method and apparatus for automatically configuring circuit cards in a computer system (Assignee -- Intel Corporation Microsoft Corporation)

March 16, 1999

U.S. Patents via NewsEdge Corporation : Abstract: A method and apparatus for automatically configuring circuit cards used in a computer system. The present invention includes a method and apparatus that enables the circuit cards to be automatically configured during system boot up without any user intervention. The present invention also includes a method for the computer system software to detect resources requested by the circuit cards in order to resolve any system resource conflicts.

Ex Claim Text: In a computer system having a bus, a processor coupled to the bus, and system resources coupled to the bus, a self configuring circuit card comprising: an interface operative to enable removable coupling of said circuit card to said bus; at least one card resource resident on said circuit card, said circuit card further including readable card resource information resident on said circuit card, said readable card resource information including information describing attributes of said card resource; and auto-configuration logic resident on said circuit card for self configuring said circuit card when said interface is removably coupled to said bus, said auto-configuration logic further including arbitration logic for reading said readable card resource information and for resolving conflicts between said system resources and said card resource.

Digital certificates containing multimedia data extensions (Assignee -- Intel Corporation)

March 16, 1999

U.S. Patents via NewsEdge Corporation : Abstract: A method and apparatus of communicating information comprising providing a datum which includes a digital certificate containing data. The digital certificate including an extension which includes: a first identifier which specifies a major classification of the data; a second identifier which specifies a minor classification of the data; and data in a format according to the major classification and the minor classification, the data indicating an owner of the datum and a use for which the datum is intended. The certificate allows authentication of the certificate itself and the data contained therein, and the data contained in the certificate can include information allowing verification of the identity of the holder of the certificate.

Ex Claim Text: A multimedia digital certificate system comprising: a. a first circuit to create a digital certificate for self authentication; and b. a second circuit to extend said digital certificate to include an extension, said extension including (i) a first field having a value that specifies a classification for said digital certificate, and (ii) a second field having multimedia data.
