Mobile Phone Makers To Launch Products At CeBIT Trade Fair

STOCKHOLM (Dow Jones)--LM Ericsson AB (ERICY), Nokia Oy (NOKA), Motorola Corp. (MOT) and Alcatel SA (ALA) will launch new products at the CeBIT telecommunications and electronics fair that starts Thursday in Hanover, Germany, officials from the companies said.

Mats Nystroem, telecom analyst with Enskilda Securities in Stockholm, said analysts watch the show closely, as it ranks as the telecom industry's top showcase for new products.

Market watchers said the pace at which new products are being rolled out has increased, in line with growing pressure from competition in the sector.

So far this year several new products have been launched by both Ericsson and Nokia, which together with Motorola dominate the global handset market.

"Nokia seems to be ahead at the moment, but the speed of technological innovation is breath-taking, so positions can change rapidly," said a Stockholm-based analyst.

CeBIT will have 7,341 exhibitors this year, slightly up from 7,239 in 1998. The organizers expect around 650,000 people to visit the trade fair. The show runs through March 24.
