Maybe this will help David....

Thar is four distinck wo'ds hyar. When "affeck" is accented on th' final syllable (a-FECT), it is a vahb meanin' "have an influence on": "Th' million-dollar donashun fum th' indestrialist did not affeck mah vote aginst th' Clean Air Ack." A much rarer meanin' is indicated when th' wo'd is accented on th' fust syllable (AFF-eck), meanin' "emoshun." In this hyar case th' wo'd is used mostly by psychiatrists an' social scientists-- varmints who no'mally knows how t'spell it. Th' real problem arises when varmints cornfuse th' fust spellin' wif th' second: "effeck." This hyar too kin be two diffrunt wo'ds. Th' mo'e common one is a noun: "When ah lef' th' stove on, th' effeck was thet th' house was filled wif smoke." When yo' affeck a situashun, yo' haf an effeck on it. Th' less common is a vahb meanin' "to create": "ah's tryin' t'effeck a change in th' way we purchase widgits." No wonner varmints is confoozed, cuss it all t' tarnation. Hey, nobody evah said English was logical: jest memo'ize it an' git on witcher life.

My schooling was such that you could effect an affect.
But then, perhaps they don't read Beowulf
(http://www.uky.edu/ArtsSciences/English/Beowulf/) anymore, either.

The net effect of that explanation? I'm more confused than ever!

o~~~ O
