Legato Systems, StorageTek, and Crossroads Form Strategic Alliance to Build Open, Intelligent SAN Solutions
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 17, 1999--Legato Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:LGTO), a leader in the enterprise storage management software market, StorageTek(R) (Storage Technology Corp., NYSE:STK), the preeminent provider of network storage, and Crossroads Systems, Inc., a developer and manufacturer of Fibre Channel storage routers, today announced a strategic initiative to deliver SAN-based serverless backup and to drive industry standards for intelligent data movement in Storage Area Networks (SANs). This solution provides customers with the capability to move critical data directly from disk to tape without server intervention and without impacting production networks. The solution will utilize technology from all three companies, and is based on the emerging third-party copy standard being developed by the Storage Networking Industry Alliance (SNIA). This standard is structured around the Celestra architecture from Intelliguard Software for moving data within a SAN. On January 28, 1999 Legato announced its intention to acquire Intelliguard Software, Inc. of Dublin, CA.
Today, a customer typically has to back up from disk by going over their network and through their server. This can have an impact on performance of business applications. The serverless backup solution announced today eliminates the need for using either the production network or server for data movement. In this way, a customer with StorageTek OPENstorage(TM) disks, tape libraries, and StorageNet(TM) SANs, including Crossroad's storage routers, could use Intelliguard's Celestra software and Legato NetWorker to back up their systems at any time during the day without impacting the servers on the Local Area Network (LAN).
Providing this kind of data movement intelligence in the SAN is the next step in SAN evolution. Legato, StorageTek, and Crossroads are now working together to make this a reality. In order to facilitate open SAN solutions, the companies will also cooperatively promote open industry standards for data movement through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to SAN-based data movers.
"Serverless backup is the next key deliverable in Legato's vision of the information utility. This alliance brings together three industry leaders who are focused on delivering real and timely value to companies that require a seamless, open solution to their backup problems," said Kent Smith, COO for Legato Systems, Inc.
"Data movement without host intervention is a strategic initiative at StorageTek, and our work with Legato and Crossroads is an important step toward our goal of open, intelligent, and integrated SAN solutions," said Joan Wrabetz, vice president and general manager, SAN Operations Business Group, StorageTek. "Serverless backup is a strategic intelligent SAN application that will give our customers much simpler and more efficient storage management. By working with partners like Crossroads and Legato, we are able to ensure that our customers will have intelligent SAN solutions that are open and multi-vendor."
"Serverless backup dramatically increases the efficiencies of customers' systems," said Brian Smith, CEO of Crossroads Systems. "Having Legato as a partner offers Crossroads the opportunity to provide tested and verified products to our customers in order to minimize risk and simplify installations in an open systems environment."
