Casio Announces WinCE PDA With Video, MP3 March 17, 1999 TOKYO, JAPAN, Newsbytes via NewsEdge Corporation : Casion Computer Co. Ltd. says it has managed to pack a video camera and support for MP3 audio into a new version of its Cassiopeia handheld computer range. The machine, which runs the Japanese version of Windows CE, will have a VR4121 RISC (reduced instruction set computer) processor from NEC at its heart. Its color TFT (thin film transistor) LCD (liquid crystal display) is capable of a resolution of 240 by 320 pixels and can display 65,536 colors. Support for the MP3 digital audio standard is new to the machine and high quality audio playback can be enjoyed through a headphone socket. A megabyte of memory can be used to store audio but the machine also accepts Compact Flash memory cards adding to its usefulness as an audio player. The video camera, which is an option on the base E-500 model but included in the E-507, is mounted on a Compact Flash card that slots into the top of the unit. Users can use it to take still or video images. The camera has a resolution of 350,000 pixels which ranks it on the low-end of the digital camera scale. The new Cassiopeia E-500 will go on sale in Japan on March 26 and carry a price tag of 98,000 yen ($830). The E-507, with video camera, will retail for 125,000 yen ($1,060) and be available from late May. Combined production of both machines will be 10,000 units per month.
