AltaVista Launches AltaVista.de German Site

MUNICH, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 17, 1999--AltaVista
Company today announced the successful launch of AltaVista Germany, found at
altavista.de. A first for the German market, AltaVista Germany users will be able to perform
full-text searches across the six million web documents existing in Germany. AltaVista.de stands alone
as the only service to offer a comprehensive directory of German web documents. In addition to the
addresses ending in .de (Germany), AltaVista now includes addresses ending in .at (Austria) and .ch
(Switzerland). German documents ending with .com, .net and .org will be added in stages.

''AltaVista is recognized as the most powerful and useful guide to the Internet,'' said Mathias Schmitz,
AltaVista Search Service, Germany. ''Today AltaVista.de makes its mark as the most comprehensive
and up-to-date German-language search service designed specifically to meet the needs of the German
market.''

AltaVista.de will also be available with a German-language user interface. AltaVista is working with the
''Centrum fur Informations- und Sprachverarbeitung'' (Center for Information and Voice Processing) at the
Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich. The center, run by internationally recognized computer linguist
Prof. Dr. Franz Guenther, is concerned with the development and implementation of linguistic processes
for transparent navigation.

Although AltaVista was U.S.-based and available in the English language until now, the frequency of
exposure for the service was very high. More than four million search queries were started by German
users each week using altavista.com. Based upon these usage figures, AltaVista in Germany is one of
the most frequently used web services with more than 28 million page views.

Background

The AltaVista systems are operated in Germany. The systems are optimally linked with the German
peering nodes and the international AltaVista site in Palo Alto, USA using ECRC (European Computer
Research Center) high-speed links.

Notes

The usage frequency for AltaVista is measured and reported according to the regulations stipulated by
the Informationsgemeinschaft zur Feststellung der Verbreitung von Werbetragern e.V. (German Audit
Bureau of Circulations). The Bureau of circulations is an independent, non-profit organization of
advertisers, agencies and publishers that provides verified audits of the circulation of business
publications, general magazines, customer magazines, giveaway papers and newspapers).

DoubleClick Deutschland (http://www.doubleclick.de) sells AltaVista.de advertising.

I'm in the 'pool this St.Patrck's Day. Lovely March sunshine, daffodils opening up everywhere, first buds starting to burst.

"St.Georges Hall, built with the wealth from Africa."

Unfortunately, too much of it from the slave trade. Have you seen the Slave Trade Museum at the Albert Dock?

Am I the only one on the thread with an Irish name?
