Lucent Technologies Makes It Possible for U S West Customers to Send Single Voice Messages to Friends and Family Across 14-State Region

BusinessWire, Wednesday, March 17, 1999 at 09:10

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 17, 1999--

U S WEST becomes first-in-nation to market Lucent's Message Send
Plus services

Lucent Technologies today announced that U S WEST Voice Messaging
customers are the first in the nation to benefit from Lucent
Technologies' Message Send Plus(sm) service, a convenient way to
share good news with family, friends, business associates and
customers in other cities or states throughout U S WEST's 14-state
region.
U S WEST is the first company to market Lucent's Message Send
Plus service, which allows U S WEST customers to benefit from the
integration of Lucent's Messaging Link (tm) technology with U S WEST's
Voice Messaging service. Lucent's innovative technology enables U S
WEST Voice Messaging customers to send a single message to other Voice
Messaging subscribers throughout U S WEST's region. With the service,
customers can broadcast information such as new addresses and phone
numbers to friends and family, schedule conference calls and meetings
with associates, or even plan family reunions. Sending one message to
multiple recipients can complete these traditionally time-consuming
activities quickly and simply.
"Lucent's Message Send Plus service is a convenient and
time-saving way to broadcast messages, whether you're alerting
co-workers or community interest groups about a meeting, or spreading
the word to family and friends about a new baby," said Teresa Taylor,
vice president of Integrated Solutions at U S WEST. "Now there's no
need to make individual calls -- just record your news, enter the
destination phone numbers and press the pound key to deliver a single
message to multiple mailboxes."
Lucent's Message Send Plus service is available now to all U S
WEST Voice Messaging customers. Messages sent outside of the
customer's calling area via Lucent's Message Send Plus service are
charged 40 cents per destination mailbox. There is no fee for messages
sent locally with U S WEST Voice Messaging. More information on U S
WEST's Voice Messaging services and Lucent's Message Send Plus service
can be obtained by calling U S WEST Residential Customer Service at
1-800-244-1111 or the U S WEST Small Business Group at 1-800-603-6000,
or can be found online at uswest.com

About Lucent's Messaging Link Technology

Messaging Link technology makes the convenience of Lucent's
Message Send Plus service possible. By connecting a service provider's
messaging systems through a networking architecture, Messaging Link
technology allows service providers to increase their subscribers'
messaging capability and reach. Messaging Link technology operates as
a voice mail switching center to provide subscriber verification and
routing of messages.
"Messaging Link technology allows service providers to take the
first step in offering ubiquitous messaging, and we are pleased U S
WEST is helping Lucent extend this advanced capability to U S WEST
Voice Messaging subscribers," said J. Kim Fennell, senior vice
president, Lucent Technologies Octel Messaging Division. "Lucent will
provide the capability for U S WEST customers to send, forward and
distribute messages to a much broader audience than ever before,
making it possible to communicate via messaging throughout 14 states
from any place, at any time."
With Messaging Link technology, customers on one system can send,
forward and distribute voice messages seamlessly to users on other
systems, regardless of the messaging platform or geographical
location. Customers also can reply to messages or mark them as urgent
or private when sending to a user on another system.
Messaging Link technology supports both analog and digital
messaging protocols, allowing service providers to install it in
combination with any messaging system. It works with any messaging
system that uses AMIS (Audio Message Interchange
Specification)-analog, Lucent's OctelNet(tm) programs or VPIM (Voice
Profile for Internet Mail). In addition, Lucent expects future
releases of Messaging Link technology to connect voice messaging
systems to the Internet so subscribers could use their home or
wireless telephone to send and receive voice messages to Internet
e-mail addresses.

microCallCentre (mCC) Transforms Centrex Systems Into Sophisticated
Call Centers

PHOENIX, March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- AG Communication Systems today announced
that it has teamed with Vancouver-based BC TEL to jointly develop and bring to
market network-grade advanced telecommunications applications services for
BC TEL's Centrex customer base. "This collaboration provides BC TEL with a
quality application development partner that allows it to bring to market
quickly and efficiently the services its customers need," noted Charles
Schulz, vice president and general manager for AG Communication Systems'
Platform Applications Group. "These applications will allow BC TEL to improve
service, increase revenue and reduce churn in the increasingly competitive
business marketplace."
AG Communication Systems said that it has delivered its microCallCentre
(mCC) call center product for market testing in BC TEL's network later this
month. Designed specifically for Centrex systems, microCallCentre
economically transforms Centrex telephone systems at small and medium-sized
businesses into sophisticated call centers. It allows Centrex subscribers to
provide their customers with many of the professional sales, service and
billing services traditionally associated with much larger companies, without
the expense of installing customer premises equipment. For example,
subscribers will be able to customize "on-hold" announcements and receive call
management reports. BC TEL plans to make microCallCentre available to its
Centrex customers by the end of March.
"BC TEL is committed to providing its customers with cutting-edge services
that enhance their business productivity and lifestyles," said Jennifer
Johnston, assistant vice president of Marketing, BC TEL Communications
Systems. "Combining BC TEL's customer focus and operations knowledge with
AG Communication Systems' network expertise allows us to continue our
leadership role in providing value through offers that meet customer needs."
BC TEL (www.bctel.com) is the second largest telecommunications company in
Canada, providing a wide range of communication products and services to
residential and business customers throughout British Columbia.
AG Communication Systems, a subsidiary of Lucent Technologies, is a
leading provider of advanced communication products and services, including
switching, access, video, wireless and intelligent network products.
