Sigh that PC growth (like everyone seem to think) i REALLY slowing, but who care, what's important is the future growth ;-) and so in 2 months people will start to talk about intel getting in the graphic business, PC sales slowing, and on and on.

Taiwan Motherboard Makers Register Growth in Orders

March 18, 1999 (TAIPEI) -- Taiwan-based producers of motherboards
are registering an increase in orders even within March, following their brisk orders received in January and February.
Giga-Byte Technology Co., Ltd. and Taiwan Mycomp Co., Ltd. are each
expected to produce more than 400,000 units this month. And local
motherboard giant Asustek Computer Inc. will likely produce 900,000
units in March.

In February, Asustek reported an output of 800,000 units, or about the same as that for January. Giga-Byte's February output stood at 320,000 units, down by about 70,000 units from the previous month. Thanks to increasing original equipment manufacturing (OEM) orders, Taiwan Mycomp saw its monthly output grow by 10,000 units, to 350,000 in February.

Taiwan's motherboard makers usually expect production to slide in
February. The month has fewer working days due to the Chinese Lunar
New Year holiday season. Also, February is normally a slack season for
the motherboard industry.

However, many local motherboard companies performed well in
February. Analysts are optimistic that the production levels will be even better in March.

Asustek received many large-scale orders in February, and the trend is
continuing into this month. With OEM orders from Hewlett-Packard Co. and Sony Corp. enjoying steady growth, the company's monthly
production level may surpass the level of 900,000 this month.

In addition to filling increasing orders, local motherboard companies also are preparing for the debut of new products at the mid-March CeBit show in Hannover, Germany.

An official at Giga-Byte said that CeBit, which is among the most
important computer trade shows, provides a great chance to introduce
new products and collect industry information.

He also said that Taiwan's motherboard makers will use the show to
introduce new models to international buyers. This is a part of their
preparations to step up production and marketing efforts in the second
half of this year.
