According to Study by IHL Consulting Group, POS Terminal Shipments See Sharpest Growth in a Decade Business Wire - March 08, 1999 07:19 MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 8, 1999--Taking its cue from the booming US economy, 1998 was the strongest year for growth of Point-of-Sale Terminal sales in over a decade, according to a new study released by IHL Consulting Group. Shipments overall surged 15%, driven by new store growth in several segments and replacements in lieu of Year 2000. According to the study, shipments in Specialty Retailers such as DIYs, Electronics Superstores, Office Supply Outlets, and Bookstores led the overall growth with a 35% increase. "Retailers in these categories not only added new stores at astounding rates," said Greg Buzek, President of IHL Consulting Group, "but these new stores were often much larger in size than their existing stores. And each of these larger stores required more POS devices than ever before." According to the study, vendors such as IBM (NYSE:IBM), NCR (NYSE:NCR), and MICROS Systems (Nasdaq:MCRS) had very strong growth in POS sales across many segments. Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT) Windows 95/98 (42% of shipments) and Windows NT (22% of shipments) continued to grow in dominance as the operating systems of choice for new systems as more retailers installed systems with graphical user interfaces. But MS-DOS and IBM's 4690 Operating System still represented over 71% of the total installed base at the end of 1998. "Thin-client technology and emerging standards based on Java technology made the most headlines in 1998," added Buzek. "But so called 'fat' clients were the rule for installations throughout the year." IHL's study, "US Point-of-Sale Market Study" reviews the shipments and installed base of POS terminals in the United States during 1998. It explores the processors and operating systems of devices being installed as well as barriers to entry for new vendors entering the market's different retail segments. Additionally, the study reviews emerging trends and the most likely penetration opportunities for new players and technology.
