Reporters

Bad reporters attempt to create controversy that doesn't exist in order to show how powerful they are.

Good reporters get mixed messages or no good answer to their questions and then dig deeper.

The reporter who wrote this article has been covering Novell for a long time. She may have dug deeper and found some conflicts.

Novell's management structure is I believe still along product lines. Stone may be in a separate higher level management group devoted to strategic thinking. Obviously no product line manager wants his revenue to drop because that drops his power.

There have been previous attempts at Novell to "pull it all together" and finally the person given the task threw up her hands and left. You may recall she had to suffer the abuses of that fellow from Timpanogas. So these are entrenched fiefdoms at Novell. I tend to believe that Schmidt hasn't cleaned up this structure yet. I hate it when Novell politics spills into the press.

Somebody should pay attention to Christine's story at Novell. In fact if I were Slitz, this being the second time this has happened, I would make the call myself.

Unfortunenately Paul is correct in Slitz's impression that he would not want to see NOVL products directly target e-commerce as its main goal in life. It is funny you asked that question because Slitz was specifically asked that question at the Global Partners Summit. It think it took some of the partners a little bit aback. He did water his statement down when challenged further that the option to pursue e-commerce products are still open when the time is right (paraphrasing his statement).

Slitz has FOCUS so much on the brain that IMO he feels taking on e-commerce is a sign of losing focus.

The good news is that Slitz's opinions seem to be overridden by someone (likely Eric) because Digital-ME and moreso the up-coming I-CHAIN ZEN are absolutely clearly e-commerce space technologies.

I only wish Slitz would tone down his "Not Now on E-commerce" message specially when that is what the industry wants from NOVL and that is what NOVL is already moving toward.

Those are my opinions.

Hello!

You might want to download the BrainShare Scheduler (http://conferenceregistration.com/download.htm), it can give you a great insight into what will be covered there. Othewise you can scan through conferenceregistration.com for abstracts.

I've actually compiled a good list of things to ask about so I'm hoping I can comeback here after BrainShare and post some news. So far, here's what my list looks like:

- EVERYTHING to do with Digital Me and E-commerce
(such as TUT150 - Integration of Web Access Controls with NDS --
The dramatic rise in the adoption and deployment rate of corporate extranets has given rise to some new requirements for corporate web infrastructures. For example, access control for confidential web content becomes critical as the number and type of extranet users increases exponentially. Many companies are adopting policy-based access control products, due to the ease of managing security privileges for large number of users that these products generally offer.
In addition, the integration of an access control technology with Novell Directory Services (NDS) is also critical. This session will present some of the customer problems that have emerged from the rapid adoption of corporate extranets, and how Novell and Netegrity are meeting this challenge. The session will also discuss the relationship between user access control privileges and the use of NDS. An architecture that provides policy-based access control, with native
integration with NDS is presented, along with techniques for extending this architecture to encompass non-web access control privileges. Netegrity will demonstrate single sign-on between NetWare 5 and web interfaces and subsequent delivery of personalized web content.

- Comparisons of MSFT's Active Directory and NDS (there's an actual session for that!)
- All ZENWorks sessions as well as K2 (JavaTools for NetWare)
- Novell Technology Lab (demos of NDSv8, Modesto, etc).
