Billing Concepts net hurt, mulls spinoff

SAN ANTONIO, March 17 (Reuters) - Bill processing and customer service company Billing Concepts Corp. said Wednesday a drop in calls to its customer service centers plus costs to acquire CommSoft cut into
second quarter revenues and earnings.

The company said it expects per share earnings to range between 16 and 17 cents for its quarter ending March 31. It also said it had hired bankers Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Securities Corp. to consider ways to boost shareholder value, which may include a spinoff of one of its divisions.

Other possibilities include the restructuring of the relationship between the company's clearinghouse service division and its software division.

The rapid growth in the company's software division, including its 22-percent stake in Princeton TeleCom, and the recent increase in acquisition activity in the telecom and billing software industry is what prompted its board to seek out advice from DLJ, the company said.

The company in 1998 reported second quarter results of 21 cents a share or $7.4 million. Analysts had expected the company to earn about 19 cents a share for the second quarter of this year, according to First Call Corp.

Recently had a problem processing bills.
Called their customer service in Chicago (the office that handles MS Money connects to CKFR) and let a message with my office number. No response.
I called again and spoke to two service reps who were not only unhelpful, but unpleasant.
Then, I e-mailed them directly asking for help. No response.
Then I e-mailed them again and informed them that I was a shareholder and a customer and that this was starting to piss me off. No response.
I finally solved the problem by installing Money 99 and reconfiguring my end.
It sounds like the problem was at my end, BUT, if any one on the thread (TLindt, etc.) has someone's ear at the company, please let them know that their customer service department is deplorable.

Bias: I am an investor (not a trader) long and will continue to accumulate shares of this company I had a rotten personal experience that does not change my assessment of this company generally. I hope that I can use this thread to positively encourage the company to direct some attention to their customer service department by complaining here to someone who has an ear at the company.

Regards,
Sol

From the Yahoo thread I thought I would re-iterate some comments regarding current stock action:

Brief Comments

1. The fact that CKFR appears to be in a trading range is a bullish sign. I think we are experiencing a consolidation in preparation for next push on the upside perhaps a little bit before earnings.

IMHO, the current chart is extremely bullish!

2. CKFR's trend has been strongly bullish since August 1998. I don't think long-term bullish trend has been broken, by any means.

No argument here.

3. As I have said before, CKFR's deal with YHOO tilted competitive landscape toward CKFR. When it's up and running, I think we will see strong subscriber growth.

4. Low volume doesn't concern me.

Its always a little unsettling to see this type of consolidation with little movement of the stock or a slight downward drift on low volume. Nevertheless, this is a "classic" consolidation that is good for a stock. I am still holding the traders I bought at $39 3/8 at this point. Unless there is some negative news which causes the stock to gap down, I think we are OK at this point.

5. In any new industry which has a bright future, there will be many entrants and new competition, and we are seeing many companies trying to muscle into this market. CKFR is still the market leader in EBPP and I don't see any major competitive threats yet.

CheckFree is the leading candidate to become the Gorilla in the exploding EBPP market!

Just be patient. Chow!

If holding CheckFree over the past few years has taught me one thing, its patience.
