More: 3Com sees e-commerce 80 pct of business by yr-end SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 17 (Reuters) - 3Com Corp. <COMS.O>, the No. 2 ranked supplier of Internet equipment, said electronic business-to-business transactions via the Web should amount to 80 percent of total revenues by the end of 1999. Currently, Web-based transactions account for 30 percent of total revenues, or about $2 billion, 3Com said in a statement. The rapid growth in electronic business will come after the company completes a worldwide, real-time, Web-based corporate network. The new computer system will give 3Com's sales partners, customers, parts suppliers and employees instant, direct access to online information for conducting business with 3Com. The new system will provide up-to-the-minute information on product availability and delivery, order management, distribution, logistics and shipping schedules. 3Com said it expanded the management team for its e-Business operations to include Eric Sternberg, e-Business vice president, and John McClelland, as the senior vice president of supply chain operations. The business unit is headed by Tom Thomas, chief information officer and senior vice president of e-Business. The company said it plans to further develop its global e-Business systems by using state-of-the-art technology from partners like Sun Microsystems Inc. <SUNW.O>, closely held enCommerce, Tibco and Inso Corp. <INSO.O>. Tibco is a unit of Reuters Group Plc <RTR.L> One application, 3Com Knowledgebase, allows customers to input a question or problem, and receive accurate answers instantaneously, directly through the Web. The cost to handle this type of call has been reduced from a minimum of $10 when it was answered by a technician, to 50 cents, 3Com said.
