More: 3Com sees e-commerce 80 pct of business by yr-end

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 17 (Reuters) - 3Com Corp.
<COMS.O>, the No. 2 ranked supplier of Internet equipment, said
electronic business-to-business transactions via the Web should
amount to 80 percent of total revenues by the end of 1999.

Currently, Web-based transactions account for 30 percent of total
revenues, or about $2 billion, 3Com said in a statement.

The rapid growth in electronic business will come after the company
completes a worldwide, real-time, Web-based corporate network.

The new computer system will give 3Com's sales partners,
customers, parts suppliers and employees instant, direct access to
online information for conducting business with 3Com.

The new system will provide up-to-the-minute information on
product availability and delivery, order management, distribution,
logistics and shipping schedules.

3Com said it expanded the management team for its e-Business
operations to include Eric Sternberg, e-Business vice president, and
John McClelland, as the senior vice president of supply chain
operations.

The business unit is headed by Tom Thomas, chief information
officer and senior vice president of e-Business.

The company said it plans to further develop its global e-Business
systems by using state-of-the-art technology from partners like Sun
Microsystems Inc. <SUNW.O>, closely held enCommerce, Tibco
and Inso Corp. <INSO.O>. Tibco is a unit of Reuters Group Plc
<RTR.L>

One application, 3Com Knowledgebase, allows customers to input
a question or problem, and receive accurate answers
instantaneously, directly through the Web. The cost to handle this
type of call has been reduced from a minimum of $10 when it was
answered by a technician, to 50 cents, 3Com said.
