Steve: No offense taken. It hadn't even passed through my mind that you were referencing Craig Lawler rather than me. Reminds me of the time I returned a call to a colleague in Fairbanks and he began asking me about dealing with a stolen airline ticket. We talked for three or four minutes and finally I suggested he call his travel agent and see what he should do! He replied, "You are my travel agent." Apparently, there is a Paul Craig in Fairbanks who is a travel agent. My colleague had called me early in the morning regarding another matter and left a message for me. He subsequently had his briefcase stolen from his car. The briefcase contained an airline ticket. He then called his travel agent, Paul Craig, and left a voice mail message for that Paul Craig to call him back as quickly as possible. When I called back shortly thereafter, he presumed that it was the other Paul Craig and nothing in the conversation led either one of us to understand that a serious miscommunication was in play. You can imagine how embarassing it was to both of us when we discovered our respective assumptions after having conversed for as long as we already had!!! Human communication is riddled with ambiguities and double meanings. If you don't believe me, just ask a politician about his or her position. Undoubtedly they'll reply with something like "I couldn't agree with you more." What they're not telling you is they also couldn't agree with you less and in fact they couldn't agree with you at all but they certainly "couldn't agree with you more" <ggg>!
