Oracle Leverages Powerful Internet Capabilities of Intel's Pentium III Xeon Processor

Oracle, Vendors Demonstrate Performance Gains at Intel Launch Events

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Demonstrating its commitment to the Intel Architecture (IA) platform, Oracle Corp. today announced that the Oracle8i(TM) database takes advantage of the new Web-enhancing features of the Intel Pentium III Xeon processor. Through a number of collaborative efforts including an Applications Solution Center (ASC) operated with assistance from Intel, Oracle has worked extensively with Intel engineering teams to optimize performance of both Oracle's core products and those of other Oracle partners taking best advantage of the IA platform and processors.

''We see a natural synergy between Oracle8i, the Internet Database, and the new Intel Pentium III Xeon processor,'' said John Hall, senior vice president of worldwide alliances for Oracle. ''The new instruction sets in the Pentium III Xeon chip help assure Oracle's ISVs that the robust Web-enabled applications they are developing for Oracle8i will run at peak performance.''

Highlighting the harmony between Oracle technology and the Pentium III Xeon processor at today's Intel launch events in San Francisco and New York City were applications from two Oracle ISVs, Extricity Software and Right Now Technologies, a demonstration of Oracle® Applications by Data General and a scalability demo from Sequent:

* Data General demonstrated Oracle Applications R11 Internet Self-Service capabilities on a Data General 16-way AviiON AV 25000 CC: NUMA server; * Extricity showed its product's ability to enable business-to-business connectivity over the Internet, using Oracle Applications R11 and other Oracle-based applications running on a DELL PowerEdge 6300 two-way server; * Right Now Technologies illustrated its Web-based customer service functionality using the Ben & Jerry's Web site and using Oracle8(TM), running on the Micron NetFRAME two-way server (in San Francisco) and the Gateway ALR 7300 two-way server (in New York) and * Sequent highlighted the scalability and performance of the of the Oracle database enabled by the Sequent NUMA-Q 2000 12-way server.

''Intel and Oracle are in a unique position to offer high-performance, affordable server solutions to all market segments, from small and mid-sized companies to global corporations,'' said Mike Pope, Director, Enterprise Software Programs, Intel. ''We believe the cooperation among Intel, Oracle and Oracle ISV partners will continue to bring powerful computing solutions to all markets.''

Since the Oracle ASC opened in October 1998, development teams at the Redwood Shores center have worked with a number of Oracle ISVs to maximize the performance of their applications running on the latest Oracle and Intel products. Portal Software, which provides customer management and billing software to Internet access businesses; next-generation IP-based services such as Internet telephony and virtual private networks (VPNs); and other emerging IP-based consumer and business services, has been working at the ASC to fine-tune its real-time registration, tracking and management features for Oracle8i, and state-of-the-art eight-way NEC Express5800 HV8600 servers.

''The combination of the platform and the tuning provided by the ASC engineers allowed us to improve the performance of Infranet with Oracle on IA from between 200 percent to nearly 600 percent,'' said Dave Labuda, chief technology officer of Portal Software. ''These benefits will extend to our customers that run on Oracle and Intel platforms.''

Windows Media Technologies Optimized for Intel Pentium III Xeon Processor

Performance and Productivity Boost Enables Streaming Media Content Providers To Lower Costs and Deliver Richer Visual Quality and Realism to End Users

REDMOND, Wash., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT - news) announced today that its Windows® Media Technologies will be optimized for Intel Corp.'s new Intel Pentium® III Xeon(TM) processor, resulting in significant time and cost savings for content providers and a sharper, smoother visual experience for end users. Microsoft plans for a future release of Windows Media Technologies to contain an updated MPEG 4 video codec that is optimized for the Pentium III Xeon processor.

Faster Encoding Rates Reduce Development Costs

In a business where time directly translates to money, content developers are always looking for ways to increase efficiency. The Pentium III Xeon-optimized MPEG 4 codec in Windows Media Technologies accelerates encoding speed and can encode on-demand video up to 40 percent faster than on the previous-generation Pentium II Xeon chip. In addition, the codec encodes live video at 640 x 480 at a rate of 25 fps on a dual Pentium III Xeon 500 -- a significant increase in performance. This improved encoding performance will help boost productivity and save development time and costs for content developers.

''By optimizing Windows Media Technologies for the Pentium III Xeon processor, we will provide our streaming media customers with dramatic improvements in speed, frame rate and resolution for on-demand and real-time encoding,'' said Tod Nielsen, general manager for developer relations at Microsoft. ''Our new MPEG 4 codec in Windows Media Technologies is optimized to provide content developers with the fastest encoding performance available, resulting in huge cost savings.''

''The combination of Intel's Pentium III Xeon processor with Microsoft's optimized Windows Media Technologies-based MPEG 4 codec will enable companies to deploy scalable, high-performing streaming media solutions,'' said Andre Walper, director of marketing, Intel workstation products group. ''By taking advantage of these two new technologies, content developers will be able to deliver a faster, more compelling streaming media experience.''

New Levels of Visual Quality and Realism for the End User

The MPEG 4 codec optimized for the Pentium III Xeon processor provides higher resolution and frame rates for live encoding, affording end users a much crisper and smoother video experience. Pentium III Xeon processor optimization also boosts decoder and post-filter performance, leaving ample processing power for displaying rich visual data on the client. In addition, Microsoft® Windows Media Technologies software is backward-compatible, allowing the rapidly growing community of over 25 million users of Windows Media Player to view content optimized for the new Pentium III Xeon processor.

Availability

Windows Media Technologies offer best-of-industry streaming-media functionality, with tools for quick and easy preparation of content; integration with security, management and administration features of the Windows NT® Server operating system; and built-in access to online-commerce products. The new MPEG 4 codec, including Intel Pentium III Streaming SIMD Extensions, is scheduled to ship by the end of June.
