Free PCs!
Mike Hogan, PC Computing
March 15, 1999

How much did you pay for your last computer? Think you got a good deal? Guess again. Did you know you can pick up a brand-spanking new PC for free? That's free, as in no money down, no payments, no interest, just log into a Web site or dial an 800 number and one will show up on your doorstep the next day.

And we're not talking about used systems, or brain-dead 386 clones, or stinkers from Bulgaria. You won't get a fire-breathing 500MHz screamer, but for lots of people a 333MHz Pentium gets the job done just fine.

So how can companies afford to give away PCs? There's so much money in Internet-based services, and such a scramble to sign up customers, that companies are drooling over the prospect of getting you hooked. Dozens of ISPs, cable companies, power companies, even grocery stores are pushing prices to zero. And it doesn't hurt that PCs are so cheap to manufacture that they're stamping them out like toasters.

yeah yeah sure, trash computer... yesterday technology.. I do worry about hand held devices taking the place of desk top pc for email. Once G3 is resolved we will be able to have full motion video wireless connections. I see QCOM making out big time on the above.
