G'day all - Ken, here is some more details regarding Accelar 8000 from my internetwk daily

Nortel Adds Switching Options

Nortel Networks next month will top off its switch-router line
with a new high-density switch that's being positioned for IT
managers as an alternative to Cisco gear.

The Accelar 8000 will support up to 384, 10/100 ports and
128-Gigabit Ethernet ports and has a 256-Gbps backplane. It
will be available in 10-slot and six-slot versions. By
comparison, the current top Accelar switch, the 1200, has
eight slots, supports 12 Gigabit ports and 96, 10/100 ports.
Nortel also will unveil the Accelar 740, 750 and 790 load-
balancing switches.

The 8000 is a direct attack on Cisco's Catalyst 6000 line and
8540. The 6000 is a Layer 2 switch with a routing blade and
the 8540 is a 13-slot switch-router with a 40 Gbps backplane
that supports up to 128, 10/100 ports and 16 Gigabit Ethernet
ports.

For IT managers, Nortel has finally completed its Accelar line
by adding a high-density switch to support the rest of the line,
which runs from the core to the wiring closet. Nortel is using
the switch to support its Unified Networks strategy for voice,
video and data in the enterprise. The market is being hotly
contested by Cisco and Lucent Technologies. By John Fontana
