3/17 14:48 T =Monsanto To Refile Soon For Brazil OK Of Soybean Seed
By Scott Kilman

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Dow Jones)--Monsanto Co. (MTC) said it still plans to seek
clearance from the government of Brazil to sell its genetically-modified
Roundup Ready soybean seeds to farmers there in time for the next planting
season.

Monsanto confirmed earlier reports Wednesday that it has temporarily
withdrawn a filing with the Brazilian government that is one of many steps it
must take in order to get commercial clearance for its seed. But a Monsanto
spokesman said the company plans to refile its application shortly.

Wall Street analysts are watching Monsanto's efforts closely because Brazil
is a major soybean producer, and potentially a huge customer for Monsanto's new
genetically-modified seed. The seed grows a soybean plant that is able to
tolerate exposure to Monsanto's powerful Roundup herbicide, making it easier
for soybean farmers to chemically weed their fields.

Monsanto said it withdrew an application it had filed with the National
Service of Cultivar Protection that seeks intellectual property protection on
the seed. Monsanto said it already has intellectual property protection in
Brazil on the gene that gives the soybean plant its unique trait.

The Monsanto spokeswoman said Monsanto needs to have the intellectual
property application approved before it can seek clearance from the government
to sell its Roundup Ready soybean seed commercially. Monsanto said it withdrew
the intellectual property application in order to make revisions, and plans to
file a corrected version shortly.

Monsanto is already producing Roundup Ready seeds in Brazil in anticipation
of getting approval to sell them to farmers.
