It is interesting. I think when you say, "We are farther along now," you are imaginatively construing the project as a road to travel, and completion as reaching the end of the road; and maybe when someone says, "We are further along now," they are conceiving the project as a different sort of entity, the 'alongness' being in time or quantity or....

oh to hell with it, right?
