The Office Assistant is the pernicious little character that pops up with tips and help files in Office (but which can, mercifully, be turned off, but not, as Michelle pointed out, quickly enough).

I saw a beta of the web page agent awhile ago. It's an animated character that can move independent of other elements on the page and could, in the beta, interact in various ways with the user when something was clicked or passed over with the mouse. In the beta, they included several stock characters, all of which were more annoying than the Assistant characters included in Office.

But in fairness, I should say that there are, reportedly, some folks who actually seem to like the Office Assistant (although I haven't met one personally). Those folks will probably rush to include the Agent on their not-yet-sufficiently-over-the-top GeoCities web pages. And it's also very impressive technology at work.

Both this technology and the Office Assistant are remnants of the ever-so fondly remembered Microsoft Bob.
