Lisa Nash, vice president of customer management at E*Trade, said her firm's site never went down entirely on Wednesday.

''It was intermittent -- not across the board -- and it happened just for a short period of time,'' she told Reuters, without elaborating.

''The site was up the whole time,'' she said. "There appears to be some problems with some customers accessing the trading page
specifically.

Shares of E*Trade were off $1.44 at $55.44 on the Nasdaq market.

''We've also got reports that there was an issue with the Internet backbone around the same time that may have been a contributing factor,
but that's something that we are investigating as well,'' she added, referring to the underlying structure of the Internet.

Nash said E*Trade dealt with any customer complaints as they were lodged
