United Air lines sets Y2k cost at $90 mln

WASHINGTON, March 17 (Reuters) - The world's largest airline, United Air Lines Inc., estimated it will cost about $90 million to eradicate the millennium bug from its computer systems, a regulatory document showed Wednesday.

Of that total, $28 million has already been spent, while the remaining $62 million is expected to be spent in 1999, the airline said in an annual filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The $90 million consists of $38 million in capital spending and $52 million in expense. Company officials were not immediately available to say how much of the total cost, if any, is being accounted for as a charge against earnings.

The carrier, a unit of UAL Corp (NYSE:UAL - news) continues to test its aircraft systems and to work with its manufacturers to ensure Year 2000 readiness. It said that by Sept. 30, it will complete a risk analysis and develop risk estimates after completing the airline readiness review.

At this point, United said it does not have specific contingency plans in place.

The problem, often called the millennium bug, is rooted in the way dates are recorded and computed.

For the past several decades, systems have typically used two digits to represent the year, in order to conserve memory. With this two-digit format, however, the year 2000 is indistinguishable from 1900, or 2001 from 1901.

As a result, system or application programs that use dates to perform calculations, comparisons or sorting may generate incorrect results or not function at all.

The Elk Grove Township, Ill.,-based company said it believes that the current and planned activities to modify its systems will reduce the risks of a business interruption.
