Sorry to bother you with all these posts, but this field seems to have news everyday. What is the relationship between CIC and Baltimore? Competitor or Partner?

( BW)(BALTIMORE)(ZGO.) Baltimore UniCERT Chosen by Kommunedata 'KMD' to Establish an E-Commerce Security Infrastructure in Denmark

CeBIT 99

HANNOVER, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 1999--Baltimore, the operating name of Zergo Holdings plc (London: ZGO), a global leader in e-commerce and enterprise Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) solutions has licensed its technology to KMD, Denmark's largest systems operation and software house, to enable the establishment of the first commercial Certificate Authority (CA) service in Denmark. As a Commercial CA , KMD will confirm the identity of users enabling the Danish public to conduct secure Internet business.
KMD have purchased Baltimore UniCERT CA system and will act as a Trusted Third Party issuing digital certificates to businesses and individuals. Digital certificates are your electronic credentials for conducting secure e-commerce. Acting like "Digital Ids" or "Digital Passport," they provide the authentication and confidentiality for a variety of systems including online banking, online shopping, secure email and virtual private networks.
"There is a need for authentication and confidentiality when dealing on the Internet. Following a thorough evaluation of PKI technology we chose Baltimore's UniCERT system for its open, policy driven architecture which provides the highest level of trust for the transmission and storage of sensitive information on public networks," said Finn Grimstad, Vice President Technical Development at KMD.
Businesses and consumers have been restricted in leveraging the full potential capabilities of electronic messaging and Internet-based technologies because of uncertainties surrounding issues of identity, confidentiality, privacy, trust and authority. Commercial CA's, also known as Trusted Third Parties are agencies which provide an authentication and certification service to other organisations or end users to enable secure Internet business. They issue and manage digital certificates (also known as Digital ID's or Digital Passports) which are used within a PKI to electronically authenticate users.
"KMD's technical expertise and solid reputation, especially within the Public Sector, make them an ideal organisation to act as a Certificate Authority. Baltimore is excited about working with KMD to establish a secure infrastructure for E-Commerce in Denmark," commented Aidan Gallagher, Vice President Sales at Baltimore.
KMD will run a certificate management system, issuing digital certificates online for enterprise and public users. KMD will also be responsible for critical PKI activities including user identity validation, certificate generation and signing, managing certificates in a directory and performing certificate revocation and validation at the highest trust level.
KMD has already announced that it is deploying CA services for a project initiated by the Ministry of Research in Denmark. Further information on KMD's CA service can be found at kmd-ca.dk.
Over the past few months, Baltimore has announced a number of Commercial CA deployments world-wide. More information is available on baltimore.com.
