MURRAY HILL, N.J., March 18 (Reuters) - Lucent Technologies Inc. said Thursday that AT&T Corp. <T.N> will conduct trials of a new Lucent switching enhancement designed to allow current voice networks to better handle data traffic.

The enhancement would allow AT&T's network to handle voice-over-Internet Protocol (IP) or ATM technologies, and to provide a variety of data services, while maintaining the reliability needed for voice traffic, Lucent said.

IP and ATM are both standards used to make efficient use of networks transmitting large amounts of data as well as voice.

AT&T will conduct the trial of a version of Lucent's AnyMedia MultiService Module, which routes voice calls to an IP network.

Lucent said it expects it to have the same reliability as its 5ESS switch currently in use in AT&T's long distance network but to offer enhancements to the current technology.
