You probably have a high tax on the gas. If there is a price difference from one state to the next it is usually in the state tax or an added local tax. Maybe the other exception is calf. where there requirement for pollution free gas has extra additives or refining cost.

Chevron & Tesoro have a duopoly. Oil comes via ship as does a lot of U.S. oil. Hawaii is no further from oil than is East Coast from Saudi.

So is the crude oil actually refined in Hawaii, or is it refined in the continental US and then the refined products shipped to Hawaii? If it is refined in Hawaii, are the refineries large enough so that you get the same economies of scale that you have in a mainland refinery? And, is it refined on each island or are the finished products transported between islands? If they're transported between islands is it done by pipeline (don't the islands have a non-trivial relative drift, endangering pipelines?) or are the products transported via ship? Any of these could increase costs.

Hawaii also has the highest gas taxes.

Blame your state government for that one.

Don,

REOn the latest run, I've been shorting puts

Is that the same as writing or selling puts? I have often shorted stocks but never options.

Hawaii would be God's homeland if it were not for the Socialist mentality which permeates the politics there. Best deterrent to Hawaiian immigration ever. Until Hawaii does something about the dependence upon tourism and the Japanese, IMO, there will be little left for the young people to stay there for. Nice sun but what do you do for a living! I think a major part of Hawaiian youth now lives in and around Las Vegas where a reasonable house can be had for 100K and there is real work, not just catering to limited and decreasing supply of Hawaiian tourists!
