Data from a Washington Post/ ABC News poll published yesterday:
On the question "who can handle the economy better", 47% said the Dems, and 42% said the Reps. With a margin of error of three percent, that is practically a draw... "Managing the federal budget" is even closer, 43% for the Dems, 40% for the Reps. The Dems have big leads on things like protecting Social Security and improving the schools, but the Reps have big leads on issues like morality and foreign affairs. 47% say that they want the country to continue moving in Clinton's direction, while only 29% say that they want it to move in the Republicans direction. And yet 11% said that there was either no difference, or that they had no opinion, and 13% said that they wanted neither direction or a "different" direction. Considering the state of the economy, these are pretty weak numbers for the Democrats. 40% approve of Republicans in Congress, while 56% disapprove. 51% approve of Democrats in Congress, while 42% disapprove. On the other hand, that is an improvement over last month, and therefore a sign that things are settling down. But the most interesting thing is the continued preference, in poll after poll, including one published in the Post 2 days ago, for Bush or Dole over Gore, even though most people believe that Gore will continue Clinton's policies...
