Lynn: To answer your old question, stock splits are much rarer in the UK. Shares generally have a higher nominal value. This may or may not be linked to the much smaller percentage of the general population in the UK than in the US who own shares directly - although it is growing. The biggest boost to shareholding was with the privatisation of the public utilities, but many who received shares from the IPO sold them immediately so these shares finished up with the big institutions anyway.
