(SAB) Brazil: Orckit Communications to set up modems plant in Ma 3/19/99 20:11 Orckit Communications, from Israel, is to set up a digital modems plant in the free port of Manaus, to reinforce its presence in the Brazilian market where it distributes since 1997 through the representatives Splice and Istelcom. Istelcom will have a minority share in the subsidiary, but the role of Splice is not defined yet. The future unit will supply to the Brazilian and Latin American markets. Orckit offers high speed DSL modems for corporate (HDSL) and household (ADSL) uses. Orckit's HDSL modem will compete locally with similar products from Parks, Elebra, and Digitel.
