It's worse than that. I have been moving out of mutual funds during the last little while. Most of them were back-end loaded and the penalty continues for 5 to 7 years, although it reduces over time.

Since most mutual funds underperform the market, coupled with the penalties upon withdrawal, it's hard to understand why they have been so popular. Mind you, I was in them for years, so why would you listen to me!

<You get killed..> Try Royal Action Direct. They allow short term trading of their funds with no penalty. No other broker that I am aware of will do this.
