news!!!!!Cabletron Gets Serious About
Directory Services
(03/18/99, 4:39 p.m. ET)
By Kimberly Caisse, Computer Reseller News

Cabletron Systems said it plans to join the list
of networking hardware vendors that have
teamed up with the likes of Novell, Netscape,
and Microsoft to deliver directory services to
customers.

Partnerships with the three companies are in the
works, according to a source familiar with Cabletron's
plans.

The Rochester, N.H.-based company is eyeing Novell
because of its leadership in directory services, but
also wants to team with Netscape because of the
performance of its directory, the source said. And
"everyone's in the big wait" for Microsoft's Active
Directory Services.

Cabletron said it plans to build support for NDS
into its SmartSwitch and SmartSwitch Router
products and Spectrum network-management
software, the source said. It will do this with the other
directory vendors' products, as well.

"Cabletron hopes to demonstrate its LAN switch and
router integration with leading directory vendors
ahead of its competitors," the source said. The
company thinks it will standout among competitors
because it has 10 years of experience supporting
multivendor networks with its Spectrum
network-management software.

Cabletron has been shipping at least one
directory-enabled software product called
SecureFast since 1994.

But until now, Cabletron's software and hardware
have had proprietary interfaces that connected to
directories, the source said. It will now add LDAP
interfaces to those products.

"This is a move that's been long overdue for
Cabletron," said Laura DiDio, senior analyst at Giga
Information Group, in Cambridge, Mass. "They're
doing something to leverage the powerful capabilities
of Spectrum. It's sort of been a jewel they've kept in
the safe."

Because Spectrum and NDS are proven products
that have been on the market for six or seven years,
a deal between the two companies could be a
powerful combination, DiDio said. But to be
successful, Cabletron and Novell have to "execute
this and execute it quickly."

Teaming with Netscape could also be a good move
for Cabletron's directory effort, she said.

Despite its past experience with directories,
Cabletron is late to the standards-based directory
game, said Eddie Hold, research analyst at Current
Analysis, in Sterling, Va.

"They kind of dropped the ball," Hold said. "You've
had everyone talking about policy-based networking
and directories for the last six to eight months."

But announcing the intention to work with the top
directory vendors is a good catch-up move for
Cabletron as long as it is accompanied by a solid
solution for policy-based networking and directory
services, he added.
