With Musser's talk on CNBC, he created a whirlwind of hype for SFE. To some degree I have been kicking myself for selling out at 17 or so this past fall. I have continued to follow the stock and with the exception of the last couple of days run-up, I have done better without SFE.

But what all these new momentum "Longs" don't realize is how very little SFE actually is involved in the internet right now. Sure they have 5-6 actual investments in internet related companies, but as many have pointed out, they are just beginning to look that way.

In addition, people should take notice that for an investment company to shift its investment style like SFE says that it is now doing, it brings on an entirely new sets of risks. Companies like CMGI, TMO, and SFE really are only as good as their management's ability to make good investments.

Here is an example (although extreme, still valid)....
An portfolio manager who runs a value oriented mutual fund sees greener pastures on the other side of the fence in the tech stocks. Just because he is an excellent value investor, that doesn't mean he is an excellent growth investor. I would be willing to bet that he probably won't be a very good tech investor.

The reason I owned SFE was because of their rights offering process. When that well dried up, I was out of there. I just hope for the other true longs, they sell out before the vapor of internet mania blows away to reveal a company that just wants to be an internet stock.
